Vietnam’s internet messaging adoption rate among users aged 16 and above topped 95.8% as against the global average of 94.5%, a survey has found.

The Digital 2025 Global Overview Report by We Are Social and Meltwater analyzed global digital trends in 2024, covering internet usage, social media growth and website rankings.

The Philippines (98.9%) and Indonesia (98.4%) had the highest online messaging adoption rate in Southeast Asia.

Usage was highest among 16-24-year-olds, with 96.7% of males and 96.3% of females using chat and messenger services. The lowest adoption was seen among those aged 65 and above, at 76.5% for men and 68.5% for women.

Vietnam also exceeded the global average in mobile video call usage (by 41.1% to 35.5%) in the third quarter of 2024 to rank sixth among surveyed countries, as reported by Znews.

The top five were Nigeria (75.4%), South Africa (53.9%), the Philippines (49.5%), the UAE (44.8%), and New Zealand (43.5%).

Another study, Connected Consumer Q3 2024 by Decision Lab, found that Zalo remained Vietnam’s dominant messaging platform in terms of both penetration and preference.

Zalo had an 85% penetration rate followed by Facebook at 59% and Messenger at 52%.

At a conference last November Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long said as of June 30, 2024, Vietnam had 110 million social media accounts.
