The best universities for AI across six continents

China's Tsinghua University and U.S.-based Carnegie Mellon University are among the universities leading AI research across six continents, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Asian universities account for 18 of the top 20 institutions in the 2026-2027 U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings for AI, according to a U.S. News report released Wednesday.

Chinese universities hold 14 of those positions, while Singapore and Hong Kong each have two representatives.

In Africa, Egypt's Mansoura University is the continent's highest-ranked institution, placing 122nd globally.

In Australia and New Zealand, the University of Technology Sydney ranks 15th globally, making it the region's leading AI university and one of only two institutions outside Asia in the global top 20.

Europe's highest-ranked institution is ETH Zurich, also known as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, which ranks 19th globally, followed by the University of Oxford in the U.K.

North American universities rank lower in the global AI standings, with Carnegie Mellon University leading the region at 39th worldwide.

It is followed by Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley.

No university from Latin America appears in the U.S. News AI subject rankings.
