Smartwatch bands contain high levels of toxic 'forever chemicals'

Smartwatch bands from some major brands contain high concentrations of toxic "forever chemicals," which could increase cancer risks.

These bands, made from fluoroelastomers, were found to contain substantial amounts of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a type of forever chemical linked to several health issues, including hormone disruption, weakened immune systems, and developmental problems in children, Android Authority reported.

This chemical belongs to the PFAS group, which is commonly found in everyday items like non-stick cookware, mattresses, and food wraps.

The study examined 22 smartwatch bands from various brands and price ranges and found PFHxA in fluoroelastomer bands, with higher concentrations in those priced above $30, according to Independent.

Major smartwatch and fitness tracker manufacturers, including Apple, Huawei, Samsung, and Google, offer fluoroelastomer bands citing their durability, Android Authority noted.

Researchers cautioned that PFAS can seep into the skin through smartwatch bands, especially during physical activity when users sweat. However, the extent to which the chemical is absorbed or the long-term health effects of prolonged exposure remain unclear.

Alyssa Wicks, the lead author of a related study on PFAS absorption and associated health risks, advised consumers to consider alternative materials.

"If the consumer wishes to purchase a higher-priced band, we suggest that they read the product descriptions and avoid any that are listed as containing fluoroelastomers."

The study's authors urged manufacturers to disclose materials used in wearable tech and called for more research into health risks from prolonged PFAS exposure through skin contact.
