ShanghaiRanking's 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, released Sept. 15, primarily measures universities' research performance rather than their teaching quality or student experience.
The ranking covers 57 subjects spanning natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. Around 2,000 universities from 96 countries and regions are included.
Universities are assessed across five areas: world-class faculty, world-class research output, high-quality research, research impact and international collaboration.
NTU also placed in the global top 10 in several other subjects this year. It ranked first for artificial intelligence, second for automation and control, fourth for electrical and electronic engineering, and fifth for both mechanical engineering and telecommunication engineering.
It ranked sixth for nanoscience and nanotechnology and eighth for transportation science and technology.
In ShanghaiRanking's broader 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities, which assesses universities across disciplines, NTU ranked 84th globally, while NUS placed 53rd.
