EngineAI announced on Jan. 26 that it has partnered with Beijing Interstellar Human Spaceflight Technology to launch the program, according to CNEVPost.
The Shenzhen-based company said space missions place extreme demands on robotic stability, environmental adaptability, and autonomous decision-making because of harsh extraterrestrial conditions.
It plans to work with Interstellar to improve PM01’s reliability and task execution capabilities in space.
It added that humanoid robots could outperform humans in certain space operations or reduce risks for human crews. These include external maintenance of space stations, exploration of hazardous environments, and long-duration monitoring tasks, according to Interesting Engineering.

The PM01 stands 1.38 meters tall and weighs about 40 kilograms, and is designed for research that combines human-like motion with advanced robotic intelligence.
It features a core display for interaction, a bionic structure that mimics human movement, and a waist capable of rotating up to 320 degrees.
In June last year, EngineAI launched a lightweight commercial version called PM01 JD Joy Inside on the e-commerce platform JD.com, priced at about $27,000.
In December, the company drew skepticism after releasing a video showing its T800 humanoid robot performing physical demonstrations, including breaking doors, throwing punches, and knocking down the company’s founder during a sparring session.
