Tesla CEO Elon Musk lives in a small modular house near SpaceX’s Starbase site in Texas, where his mother, Maye Musk, said she once slept in the garage during a visit.

On March 11, a post on social media platform X showed Elon’s home in Boca Chica, Texas, described as having "No fancy things, only what's essential for living," with a small kitchen, fridge, simple dining table and a wooden desk, several books and a model rocket.

Maye shared the post, quipping that the fridge in the photo had no food, adding that "The garage where I slept is on the right."

She also said there was only one towel in the shower, which she left for Elon, noting she did not mind as she once spent three weeks in the Kalahari Desert during childhood without showering.

Elon, who remains the world’s richest person with an estimated net worth of about $814.3 billion as of March 20 according to Forbes, has previously described the property as his main residence.

In a 2022 post on X, he wrote: "My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It's kinda awesome though."

The home is a "Casita" model built by Las Vegas-based startup Boxabl. Covering roughly 35 square meters, it can be folded for transport by truck and installed within a day.

The structure is designed to resist mold, wind, fire, water and insects, and includes a compact kitchen, living area and bedroom.

According to Hello! magazine, Elon uses the house as a resting place after long workdays at SpaceX’s nearby Starbase facility.

Despite the modest residence, Musk has also been linked to larger property holdings in Texas.

In October 2024, The New York Times reported that he had purchased multiple properties in Austin worth about $35 million, allegedly to create a compound for his 11 children and two of their three mothers.

The report said the properties include a 14,400-square-foot Tuscan-style villa, a six-bedroom mansion and another mansion located about a 10-minute walk away. Elon later denied the report.
