Samsung will halt sales of its US$2,899 Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone about three months after launch as rising component costs and thin profit margins weigh on the experimental foldable device.

A company spokesperson told Bloomberg that the South Korean tech giant will begin by stopping sales in its home market before withdrawing the model from the U.S. once remaining inventory is cleared.

The move had been anticipated after Samsung’s website stopped providing restock updates for the foldable earlier this month. The device is currently listed as "sold out" in the U.S.

According to South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo, the TriFold was never intended to become a regular product in Samsung’s lineup. Instead, it was designed as a "flagship showcase" to demonstrate the company’s ability to develop a trifold smartphone.

The report cited an unnamed industry expert who said the device was "an iconic product created to show its technological prowess rather than make a profit from sales."

Rising hardware costs have also reduced the device’s profit margin. Prices for components such as DRAM, NAND flash memory and application processors have increased rapidly, putting pressure on the economics of producing the phone.

Samsung first announced the Galaxy Z TriFold on Dec. 1, 2025. It debuted in South Korea on Dec. 12 and later went on sale in the U.S. on Jan. 30, 2026 for $2,899.

The phone features a 6.5-inch cover screen and two hinges that allow it to unfold into a 10-inch main display.

In an interview with Bloomberg last month, Samsung mobile business chief Won-Joon Choi said the company has not committed to developing a successor to the TriFold.

However, he suggested some of its design features, including the larger display and wider aspect ratio, could eventually be adopted in Samsung’s other foldable smartphones.
