Instagram users hit by mass unintended bans, AI screening suspected

Instagram users have been facing a surge in account suspensions in recent weeks, with many suspecting that artificial intelligence automation may be behind the issue.

Reports from platforms like Reddit and X highlighted complaints from users who claim their accounts were banned despite not violating Instagram's terms of service. In some cases, users submitted appeals hoping for a review of their accounts, but many allege they received no response, according to TechCrunch.

Additionally, frustration has grown over Instagram's lack of direct support, with many users unable to contact a Meta representative. "I’ve already submitted multiple appeals, uploaded my ID, and tried reaching out to Meta through all the official channels, but I’ve been completely ignored," wrote one Reddit user (u/Dyrovicious) whose Instagram account was banned. "It feels like I’m shouting into a void."

Although direct evidence is lacking, many users have expressed concern that AI may be contributing to the mass deactivations. In South Korea, the Korea JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported on June 5 that suspensions began affecting thousands of users, prompting accusations that Meta's reliance on AI in account screening may be to blame.

In response, a Meta Korea spokesperson confirmed that the company uses AI in the review process but emphasized that human oversight is also involved. However, they could not confirm if AI was the cause of the suspensions, stating that Meta is "currently looking into the situation."

On X, users worldwide have flooded Instagram’s replies, urging the company to address the issue. A Change.org petition on the suspensions has gathered over 4,000 signatures. The situation has escalated, with some users threatening a class action lawsuit against Meta.

The impact of the suspensions extends beyond personal accounts, affecting businesses that rely on Instagram for their operations. A gym owner shared on Reddit: "This ban has directly affected my business and all of the hard work and branding that I’ve spent countless hours pouring into my business, my gym, and my students."

In a concerning development, some users claim their accounts were banned over accusations as serious as child sexual exploitation, a charge that jeopardizes both reputations and careers.

Earlier this year, Pinterest faced a similar issue with mass bans, prompting complaints from users who felt their actions had not violated company policies. A group of Pinterest users also threatened legal action, and in May, the company admitted the bans were caused by an "internal error," while denying that AI moderation was involved.
