First, we must rule out objective factors. Assume the new unit has been installed correctly, has no technical issues, and is operating as described by the manufacturer. Even so, your perception may still be valid and many people share the same experience.
You did not specify the models, but nearly 20 years ago your old unit was likely a conventional non-inverter air conditioner and almost certainly did not use the newer R32 refrigerant, since it was introduced around 2014.
Modern inverter air conditioners run at maximum power only during the first few minutes, then gradually reduce output as they approach the set temperature. Even after reaching the desired temperature, they continue operating at low capacity to maintain consistent cooling. In contrast, non-inverter units run at full power until the room reaches the set temperature, then shut off completely and restart only when the room warms up again.
This on-off cycle creates a larger temperature gap, especially when the compressor restarts, which produces a sharper blast of cold air. That sudden drop in temperature can create the sensation of "deeper" cooling.
However, this is mainly a perception caused by rapid temperature changes and may not be ideal for health. Inverter units provide steadier cooling without abrupt hot–cold fluctuations. They are also more energy-efficient, especially when used for longer periods throughout the day.
Another factor is refrigerant type. A unit purchased in 2008 likely used R22 refrigerant, which operates at lower pressure and may produce a stronger initial cooling sensation compared to newer, more environmentally friendly refrigerants such as R32.
In short, the "deeper" cold feeling from the old unit is usually a short-term sensory effect rather than evidence of better cooling performance. Besides energy savings, newer premium models often include added features such as air purification, negative ion functions, self-cleaning systems, quieter operation, and multi-directional airflow for more even cooling.
That said, if the new unit genuinely does not cool effectively, you should ask the seller to check whether installation was done properly and rule out any potential defects under warranty.
