Here’s what to steer clear of:
1. Using damaged or frayed cables
Nick Barber, co-founder of energy company Prepaid Electricity, told American lifestyle website Martha Stewart that "frayed cables can cause electrical arcs, increasing the risk of shock, overheating, or fire." Replace any damaged cables immediately to avoid hazards, he said.
2. Overcharging your phone
Leaving your phone plugged in after it reaches 100% is a common mistake. Overcharging can generate excess heat, which degrades battery health over time, according to experts at phone services company Go Fix. Unplugging your phone once it is fully charged can help extend its battery life.
3. Overloading outlets
Using one outlet to charge multiple devices can overload the system. "Overloading outlets can cause wires to overheat, leading to fire hazards," Daniel Mock, vice president of electrical company Mister Sparky, said.
Use separate outlets or extension cords that can handle the electrical load to reduce risks.

4. Using off-brand cables
"Steer clear of third-party and low-quality knockoff chargers," Barber advised. Low-quality cables may lack essential safety features like surge protection, potentially causing overheating or fires. Always opt for the charger that came with your device.
5. Ignoring signs of overheating
If a device feels hot to the touch, unplug it immediately.
Barber said this could signal a wiring fault or incompatibility between the device and charger. Sergey Nikolin, president of Product Air Heating & Cooling, added that while overheating usually does not cause fires, it can still damage the device.
6. Ignoring manufacturer’s charging guidelines
Every device comes with specific charging instructions, including the recommended charger and charging duration. Ignoring these guidelines could strain your device’s battery and cause long-term damage.
7. Charging on beds or upholstered surface
Charging your phone on a bed or sofa can trap heat and lead to battery overheating.
Nikolin warned that "Fabrics trap heat and lead to phone battery overheating, which can easily damage the battery, start a fire, or cause serious injury." Always charge your device on a flat, stable surface to ensure proper ventilation.
8. Charging and streaming simultaneously
Using your phone for heavy tasks like streaming or gaming while it’s charging generates additional heat, which can harm the battery over time, according to The Independent. Let your device rest while charging for optimal battery health.
9. Charging on unstable surfaces
Placing your device on an uneven or unstable surface can increase the risk of accidental drops, which may damage the battery or device. Always charge your phone on a firm, level surface to avoid mishaps.
10. Charging near water
Avoid charging near water, such as in the bathroom. "Water and electricity do not mix," said Joel Worthington, president of Mr. Electric, a global electrical services franchise. "An accidental splash can cause shock or damage." Always charge your devices in dry, moisture-free areas to minimize danger.
