Surging number of full marathoners forces VnExpress Marathon Hai Phong organizers to revise logistics to guarantee safety and runner experience.

According to the organizers, over 10,000 athletes have signed up for VnExpress Marathon Hai Phong 2025 as of the regular phase ending Oct. 22, including nearly 4,000 in the 42km category and over 3,500 in the 21km race. This marks the first time in the VnExpress Marathon system that full marathon registrations have surpassed half marathon signups.

Duong Hai Anh, race director of VnExpress Marathon, said this surge shows a maturing running community and the strong appeal of Hai Phong’s route, where many runners achieved PR (personal records) last season. "The track from downtown Hai Phong to Do Son is known for helping runners chase PRs thanks to its cool weather and moderate inclines," Anh said.

In VM Hai Phong 2024, Japanese runner Kento Kabashima finished second in the men’s 42km group with a time of 2:33:05, setting a PR.

Living in Hanoi for over 2 years and working in the tourism sector, Kento said: "Racing in Hai Phong is a new discovery. I’m impressed by the enthusiastic cheers and warm support from locals."

The unexpected rise in runner numbers, especially in the 42km category, has led organizers to overhaul operational plans. "The entire system will be scaled and upgraded accordingly," a VnExpress Marathon representative said.

Water stations will be increased and better equipped. More tables, water tanks, electrolyte drinks, fruits, and medical supplies will be added.

Organizers are also optimizing logistics from previous events, improving the gear drop-off, start line procedures, and post-finish flow to cut waiting times.

As the event falls during winter, medical and volunteer support is a priority. Mobile medical units will be stationed at key points, while trained volunteers will assist runners affected by cold conditions.

The running route from the city center to Do Son will remain unchanged for its scenery and potential for personal bests. Minor adjustments in lanes, turnaround zones, and aid stations will be made to enhance flow and safety.

"Our goal isn’t just providing enough room to run, but to ensure a fulfilling experience for each participant," the organizers added.

In addition to the professional crew, the event also partners with local running clubs to set up cheer zones along the course, boosting morale and contributing to the race-day atmosphere.

Accustomed to training alone, Kento said racing among a crowd of fellow runners gave him a greater sense of comfort: "When I run with others at a race, I feel more comfortable than during solo training sessions."

VnExpress Marathon Hai Phong is accepting Late phase registrations until Dec. 2. Runners can sign up here.
