Tran Quoc Chien has advanced to the next round of UMB 3C Grand Prix 2021 in South Korea with one game left.

On the third matchday of the tournament on Thursday, Chien played two games, won one and lost one. His win came against South Korean cueist Heo Jung-hang after dominating both sets with scores 22-6 and 24-5. In the next game against another South Korean cueist, Cho Chi-yeon, Chien lost after two sets (13-16, 11-16).

This defeat didn’t affect Chien’s place in group C. The top four cueists in the group will advance to the next round and Chien is third with four wins and two losses. With current results, Chien has already advanced since the player in fifth is two wins away from the third position with only one game to play.

Another Vietnamese cueist in the tournament, Nguyen Quoc Nguyen, hasn’t advanced yet. On the third matchday, Nguyen scored a victory over Egyptian cueist Sameh Sidhom after three sets, which pushed him to second in group A, after world number one Dick Jaspers. However, that doesn’t guarantee Nguyen’s chance of advancing. In the next matchday, if Nguyen loses and three cueists placed after him win, he will be eliminated. The only way for Nguyen to secure a place in the next round is to win or draw against South Korea’s Choi Wan-young in the next match.

UMB 3C Grand Prix 2021 takes place from July 5 to 18 in South Korea and gathers many top-class cueists. The winner of this tournament will pocket $300,000.
