Nguyen Hong Nhung and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong finished second at the Girls U16 and U18 Super Final of FIDE Online Cadets and Youth Rapid on Wednesday.

Eight Vietnamese players in different age groups made it to the Super Final but none could win a title.

Nhung and Duong almost reached the highest spot.

In the last match of the U16 event, Nhung needed a win to finish first but lost and accepted second place behind Kazakhstan's Xeniya Balabayeva. Duong won the last two matches but was still half a point behind champion of the U18 event, Govhar Beydullayeva of Azerbaijan.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, FIDE Cadets and Youth Rapid was hosted online with 10 age events: U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 for boys and girls. The top six players of each event will advance to Super Final. There is only one grandmaster in the tournament – American chess prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra, the youngest ever to obtain the grandmaster title. He competed in the U12 event.

In the Super Final, which took place from Dec. 18 to 22, the players competed in a round-robin basis with whoever wins the most point out of six matches to claim the title.
