Vietnamese boxer makes Tokyo Olympics exit

Facing a much stronger opponent. Duong was dominated in all three rounds. Just a minute into the first round, Tsendbaatar stormed in with flurry attacks that cornered and delivered heavy blows on Duong.

The score demonstrated the difference in level between the two boxers. In the first round, four referees gave Tsebdbaatar a 10, while only one gave it to Duong. In the second and third rounds, all five refs gave the Mongolian boxer a 10 score.

"I’m a bit disappointed because I didn’t play the way I wanted. The opponent was too strong. I will return to training and improve myself. I will work harder to come back to the Olympics and go further. This will be memorable since it’s my first time in an Olympic event. To be here with many excellent boxers is already a great honor," Duong said.

Tsendbaatar is the world’s number three featherweight boxer and will face number one Albert Batyrgaziev of Russia in the quarterfinals.

With this loss, Duong became the 14th Vietnamese athlete to be eliminated from the Tokyo Olympics. Only four athletes remain in the run for a medal: Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming); Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu (archery); and Quach Thi Lan (track and field).
