The AWC is set to make its comeback in 2021, from June 19 to July 18. The event was supposed to take place last year but was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In its third edition, AWC will be held completely online to guarantee player safety.
With the addition of four slots compared to the previous installment, AWC 2021 will feature 16 teams from Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Mainland China, Indonesia, Vietnam and teams from the qualifiers. Vietnam, Taipei and Thailand will each have three slots in the tournament, while Indonesia has two. The remaining spots will be split evenly between others.
Team Flash, Saigon Phantom and V Gaming are the top three teams of the national tournament Arena of Glory that took place earlier this month.
AWC 2021 will have four stages. Each team will compete in the group stage, then the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Each stage will use a different format soon to be announced by the organizers, game publishers Garena and Tencent said.
Arena of Valor is a popular 3D, multiplayer online battle arena game developed for iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch. Players compete in matches that last 12-18 minutes on average.
The AWC is one of the biggest Arena of Valor competitions worldwide. The prize pool for this year’s edition is $500,000, with the winner getting $200,000 and a World Champion title.
