Vietnam end three-cushion championship campaign

Tran Quyet Chien and Nguyen Duc Anh Chien ended their 2022 World Three-Cushion Championship campaign after losing to Germany in the National Teams quarterfinals Saturday night.

For the hosts, Martin Horn made a strong start, leading 21-1 after 6 turns. Chien closed the gap to 18-21, but the German player went on extended the lead to 32-18. At this point, Chien could not make up the point difference, and Horn prevailed 40-28 after 17 turns.

Horn, the world number 11, averaged 2,352 points per turn, against Chien’s 1,647 points.

In the other game, Anh Chien lost 40-34 after 26 turns to world number 41 Ronny Lindemann. He averaged just 1,307 points per turn against his opponent’s 1,538 points.

The UMB World Billiard Federation awarded Quyet Chien and Anh Chien a bonus of 2,400 euros (approximately $2,600) for their performance.

This is the second time after 2019 that Vietnam entered the quarterfinals of World Three-Cushion Championship for National Teams. Then, the team was eliminated by the Netherlands.

The 2022 Las Vegas World Cup from March 27 to April 2, will be the next international tournament for the Vietnamese players.

Vietnam will field 15 cueists. Quyet Chien has qualified for the main rounds while 14 will have to compete in the qualifying rounds.
