Vietnam advance to quarterfinals of world billiards championship

Tran Quyet Chien and Nguyen Duc Anh Chien helped Vietnam draw against Colombia and defeat France to advance to the World Three-Cushion Championship for National Teams quarterfinals Friday night.

In the second match of the group stage against Colombia, Quyet Chien continued to extend his impressive run by defeating world number 23 Pedro Gonzalez 40-20 after 21 turns. Meanwhile, Anh Chien lost to Huberney Catano 37-40 after 23 turns. This resulted in Vietnam sharing points with Colombia.

In the last match of the group stage against France, Quyet Chien beat Mikael Devogelaere 40-21 after 19 turns. Anh Chien defeated Maxime Panaia 40-13, also in 19 turns. The combined average point per turn of both Vietnamese players hit 2.105.

Vietnam finished on top of Group C, thanks to two wins and a draw. In the other match Colombia surprisingly defeated the Netherlands to take second place. The Netherlands with world number one Dick Jaspers was eliminated from the tournament.

This is the second time that Vietnam entered the quarterfinals of World Three-Cushion Championship for National Teams, with the first time being 2019. At the time, the team were eliminated by the Netherlands in the quarterfinals after two defeats.

With an average of 1.896 points scored per turn, Vietnam are leading the tournament.

The 2022 World Three-Cushion Championship for National Teams takes place from March 10 to 13 in Viersen, Germany. This year's tournament features 16 teams, divided into four groups of four. The top two teams of each group make the quarterfinals.

A match is decided when a player reaches 40 points.
