The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has decided to cancel the top flight V-League 2021 competition because of complicated developments in the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

"V-League 2021 is canceled," a member of the VFF Executive Committee said Saturday. "The final step is that the VPF (Vietnam Professional Football JSC) will consult with the clubs next week. But this is just a procedure."

The VFF Standing Committee stated that the decision to cancel V-League 2021 had to be taken because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) and Viettel, the leading and runner-up teams at this juncture, have agreed with the plan to cancel the tournament as have representatives of other teams in the Executive Committee.

The results of all played matches will not be recorded and counted. The cancellation of the tournament will help clubs reduce economic losses without having to wait for the tournament to resume.

V. League 2021 has been postponed since May 7 after some players of the Song Lam Nghe An club came into indirect contact with a Covid-19 case. The league originally planned to return in July but the complicated situation of the ongoing Covid-19 wave prevented the resumption.

Tournament organizers then proposed that it is postponed to February 2022. This was approved by the VPF Board of Directors.

However, a series of V-League clubs voiced strong objections, stating they were concerned about their financial situation if the league is postponed for months.
