Nguyen Thi Tam and Vuong Thi Vy are set to compete at AIBA Women’s Boxing Championship in Istanbul in early December.

WBO world champ Nguyen Thi Thu Nhi was initially chosen to fight in the tournament. However, the star boxer had recently withdrawn from the event. After claiming the WBO world belt in late October, Nhi suffered several injuries and has yet to recover.

Vietnam Boxing Commission proposed to the Department of Physical Education and Sports to send Tam and Vy in her stead.

Tam will compete in the 52 kg category and Vy in the 57 kg event.

The tournament is hosted by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) for 12 different weight classes. The winner will get $100,000, the runner-up $50,000 and the third place, $25,000.

In the previous edition of the tournament in 2019, Tam almost got the bronze medal in the 51 kilo category after defeating Russia’s Liliya Aetbaeva in the quarterfinals. However, the result was overturned after Russia sent an inquiry to the organizers.
