"Hello, this is Roger, and I am really happy to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters," Federer said in the promotional video on social media. "Shanghai has always been a special place for me, with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game," he said.
The 44-year-old tennis legend will be joined by notable figures from China, including former world number three in women’s doubles, Zheng Jie. The tournament organizers have also invited actor Wu Lei and martial arts superstar Donnie Yen to participate, according to Sportstar.
Federer made a similar appearance at the 2024 Shanghai Masters, where he shared the court with tennis player Zhang Zhizhen, table tennis star Fan Zhendong and singer Eason Chan.
His return to the Qizhong Complex promises to be a highlight of the 2025 Shanghai Masters, as Federer has rarely participated in exhibition matches since his retirement. His last official match was at the 2022 Laver Cup, where he partnered with Rafael Nadal for his farewell performance.
Federer last competed at the Shanghai Masters in 2019, losing to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. His best results at the tournament include winning the trophy in 2014 and 2017, with a second-place finish in 2010 after losing to Andy Murray in the final.
