Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa has issued a public apology after her photo during the China Open received backlash with accusations of racism.

In a photo posted on social media on Sunday, Badosa was seen pulling the sides of her eyes back with a chopstick in each hand. The photo was part of Badosa’s highlights during her time at the China Open, which was uploaded by her coach Pol Toledo, Express reported.

Badosa’s gesture received backlash, with many accusing her of being racist towards Asian people. Although Toledo removed the photo, the criticism continued, forcing Badosa to respond as she tried to downplay the situation.

"Oh no, please don't get it that way. Never thought it would get interpreted this way, we weren't even imitating Asian people," Badosa replied to a comment on Instagram.

"I was playing around with my face and wrinkles. I love Asia one of my favorite people and have plenty of Asian friends. They are the kindest."

However, Badosa’s comment failed to convince everyone. One user wrote on X: "So Paula Badosa is now being casually racist against Chinese people while in China? I’m speechless."

The continued backlash prompted Badosa to issue a public apology on X.

"Hey guys! Really sorry didn’t know this was offensive toward racism.

"My mistake. I take full responsibility. This mistake will make me learn for next time. Hope you understand.... I love you all."

After a drop in form due to injury in the first half of 2024, the 26-year-old has improved recently. She reached the semifinals of the China Open last week, before losing to Coco Gauff, who later won the title. Badosa, seeded 14th in the Wuhan Open, will play Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round on Tuesday.

Badosa is considered a top talent in Spain, has won four WTA titles and climbed to world number two in 2022. However, her career was also affected by many scandals off the court, including an on-off relationship with tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas. In addition, she is also criticized for the lack of focus on her tennis career to pursue a career in fashion and film.
