The viral exchange occurred early in the fourth set of the final on Sunday. As the players changed sides, Djokovic spotted Nadal sitting in the front row, applauding after a great play. The Serbian legend smiled, looked up at his old foe, and quipped, "Wanna play, Rafa?"
The moment, captured by broadcast cameras, instantly went viral on social media. Nadal laughed off the offer while the Melbourne crowd erupted in amusement. Although the "King of Clay" remained in his seat, the interaction between the two legends of the sport became a highlight of the final, Daily Mail reported.
Nadal, who retired in 2024, was in attendance to witness the clash between his Spaniard compatriot Alcaraz and Djokovic, one of his greatest rivals. Before the match, the 39-year-old stated he wasn't taking sides, though he admitted that if he had to choose, it would be Alcaraz.
The lighthearted moment came amidst a grueling battle for history. Djokovic was chasing a record-extending 11th Australian Open title and 25th Grand Slam, while the 22-year-old Alcaraz was vying to become the youngest player in history to complete the Career Grand Slam.
Djokovic started strong, claiming the opening set 6-2. However, Alcaraz mounted a fierce comeback, dominating the subsequent sets 6-2, 6-3, and edging a tight fourth set 7-5 to seal the victory.
Nadal and Djokovic faced each other 60 times in their careers, the most in the Open Era, with Djokovic holding a narrow 31-29 advantage. In the Grand Slam title race, Djokovic finishes with 24 to Nadal's 22.
Throughout the match, broadcast cameras frequently cut to Nadal, capturing his reactions to the pivotal moments. The star-studded stands also included actor Liam Hemsworth, singer Jay Chou, and billionaires Lindsay Fox and Larry Kestelman.
In his speech after the match, Djokovic paid further tribute to the Spaniard.
"Obviously it feels very weird to see you there and not here but I just want to say it's been an honor to share the court with you and to have you watching the finals here," Djokovic said, as quoted by Daily Express.
"But thank you for being present. It's too many Spanish legends, it felt like I was two against one tonight! It wasn't fair but okay."
