Ly Hoang Nam was defeated Wednesday right in the first game of M15 Sharm El Sheikh, an International Tennis Federation event.

Nam, the fifth seed of the Egypt tournament, played Ukraine’s Volodoymyr Uzhylovskyi, who entered the event via qualifiers. In the first set, Nam lost 2-6 but came back stronger in the second set to win 6-2.

Both players went back and forth in the intense third set. Although Nam tried to catch up with Uzhylovskyi most of the time, the Ukrainian eventually won 7-5.

Nam was eliminated early in his first return to the international stage after nearly two years without overseas competitions due to Covid-19.

After helping Vietnam advance in the Davis Cup tournament last month, he has been in Egypt since Sept. 28 trying to improve his current world ranking, which has dropped to 781 after peaking at 385 in 2018.

According to plan, Nam would remain in Egypt and compete in the upcoming M15 tournament from October to November.

The next M15 Sharm El Sheikh event will be held Oct. 11-17.
