SEA Games Day 3: Vietnam wins 6 more gold

Vietnam has won six gold medals in canoeing, gymnastics, karate, pétanque, shooting and taekwondo, as a host of its stars are competing on the third day of the 33rd SEA Games Dec. 12.

Le Ngoc Tai and Ngo Ron won Vietnam's sixth gold medal of the day, in pétanque.

Earlier Dinh Phuong Thanh won gold medal in gymnastics parallel bar event, raising his personal collection at all SEA Games editions to 14 gold medals.

Vietnam's Bac Thi Khiem beat her Filipino opponent to win gold in taekwondo while Khuat Hai Nam won a karate gold with a victory over a Thai opponent.

Nguyen Thi Huong and Mai Thi Thuy won a gold medal by finishing first in the women's 200m canoeing doubles event, in 43.419 seconds.

Le Thi Mong Tuyen and Nguyen Tam Quang won Vietnam's first gold medal in shooting at the tournament by beating their Thai opponents in the 10m air rifle event.

Vietnam have also won four silver medals on Friday in gymnastics, karate and taekwondo, and four bronze medals in ju-jitsu and taekwondo.

After the first two days saw a series of gold medals in karate, ju-jitsu, swimming, canoeing, athletics, and gymnastics, Vietnam has high hopes for the third day.

At 12:30 p.m., the Vietnam women's volleyball team will face Indonesia to compete for the top spot in Group B. Both teams won all six sets in their first two matches against Malaysia and Myanmar.

In swimming, the focus is on the men's 1500m freestyle with Nguyen Huy Hoang, a multi-time SEA Games champion, a former Asian Games silver medalist and one of the top athletes in Southeast Asia. In the men's 400m individual medley, the dynamic duo Hung Nguyen and Quang Thuan will make a comeback, aiming to win both gold and silver.

In athletics, the focus is on the women's 100m hurdles, where Huynh Thi My Tien will compete in the qualifying round. She is expected to lead Vietnam to the finals and compete for medals. Vu Duc Anh, the high jump silver medalist at the 32nd SEA Games, also continues to be a great hope.

In the 400m race, Le Ngoc Phuc and Ta Ngoc Tuong will participate in the men's qualifying round, while Minh Hanh and Thanh Ngoc will compete in the women's final. These are all events that brought medals at the 31st SEA Games and Vietnamese athletes are eager to replicate that success.

In gymnastics, Dinh Phuong Thanh and Tran Doan Quynh Nam will compete in the parallel bars, horizontal bar and vault finals, where Vietnam also has high medal hopes.
