The male runner with long hair caused controversy when he switched to the women's track near the finish line at the Dingzhou Half Marathon on April 27. Despite being stopped by security, he outran the female champion and finished ahead of her.
According to Lizhi News, the runner, known as Liu Shu, is a well-known social media influencer from Shijiazhuang City. He is an amateur athlete with marathon experience and a personal best of 2.5 hours.
Liu is recognized in the Chinese running community not only for his athleticism but also for his distinctive long hair, which has led to several instances where he was mistaken for a female athlete.

In response to the incident, the organizing committee of the Dingzhou Half Marathon imposed a three-year ban on Liu.
Initially, Liu claimed that he entered the women's track based on the guidance of a volunteer and questioned the organizers' decision to punish him. However, after mounting public pressure and a video clearly capturing the incident, Liu admitted his mistake and posted an apology on social media.
"I deeply regret my actions," he said. "I violated the rules by crossing into the women's lane, which negatively affected everyone at the event. I fully acknowledge my mistake and accept the punishment from the organizers."
Despite his apology, Liu's actions angered many netizens in China. One user commented: "There's no limit to seeking attention and views."
Others pointed out that Liu had previously entered the women's track at other races, arguing that the three-year ban was not enough. Some even called for other marathons to ban him and for his social media accounts to be locked due to his behavior.
While marathons in China have grown significantly in recent years, bringing economic benefits and boosting tourism, incidents like this tarnish the sport's image.
In another controversial case, hundreds of runners at the Suzhou Marathon on March 2 were caught urinating in public areas along the route.
