Tran Dinh Trong will miss Tuesday's World Cup qualifier match between Vietnam and Saudi Arabia due to a sprained ankle.

Doctors have said Trong will need about two weeks to recover.

Trong has been a key part of Vietnam’s defense, playing an important role when Vietnam finished second at AFC U23 Championship in 2018 and won AFF Cup the same year.

However, after the AFF Cup, he has been beset with injuries. He missed Asian Cup 2019 and SEA Games 30. He returned to play at the AFC U23 Championship 2020 but injuries returned and he had to stay off football for the rest of last year.

A torn muscle had kept him out of World Cup qualification games against Australia, China and Oman.

While he was fully fit earlier this week and ready to play Japan on Thursday, he sprained his ankle in the last training session before the game and was crossed out from the squad list.

Besides Trong, Vietnam are also missing other players like keepers Dang Van Lam and Nguyen Van Toan, and full-backs Doan Van Hau and Nguyen Trong Hoang due to injuries.
