Le Thuy Hai, a three-time V. League winning coach, died of pancreatic cancer aged 76 on Friday.

Hai was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. In March, he had still met with Becamex Binh Duong coaching staff and players during their trip to Hanoi.

Binh Duong, managed by Hai five times, won the V. League title in 2007, 2008 and 2014, along with two National Cup crowns in 2008 and 2014.

"I watched every game of Binh Duong on TV. The club is forever in my heart. There would be no Le Thuy Hai without Binh Duong," Hai said in March.

He also coached other clubs in Vietnam like SHB Da Nang, Thanh Hoa FC, and Hai Phong FC. He spent his last season at Thanh Hoa as technical director and head coach in 2016.

Hai played football from 1965 to 1980. He started his coaching career from 1995 as an assistant coach.

Besides his many triumphs, Hai is remembered for his strong personality and honesty.

"In my mind you are a strong, simple and filled with compassion. Whether loved or hated, everyone respects you," former footballer Vu Nhu Thanh, Hai's student, maintained.
