The Philippines edged out Thailand 2-1 in a thrilling first-leg semifinal at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Friday night, with a late winner by center-back Linares securing a crucial advantage for the home side ahead of the return leg in Bangkok.

The game started with the Philippines taking the initiative, and their efforts were rewarded in the 21st minute when Sandro Reyes scored a spectacular goal. Picking up the ball at the edge of the penalty area, Reyes executed a skillful turn and unleashed a left-footed strike into the top corner, leaving Thailand goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai with no chance.

Thailand struggled to respond initially but found their footing as the half progressed. Their equalizer came in the 45th minute from a swift counterattack. Suphanat Mueanta broke down the right flank, combining with Patrik Gustavsson, who delivered a pinpoint cross for Suphanan Bureerat to tap in from close range, making it 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Thailand appeared determined to capitalize on their momentum, with several near-misses, including Suphanat hitting the crossbar in the 47th minute and Peeradol Chamratsamee's long-range effort striking the post in injury time. Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Thailand could not find the decisive goal.

The Philippines, buoyed by a resilient defensive performance and the brilliance of goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad, held firm and struck a late blow in the 95th minute. From a well-taken free kick, Paul Tabinas headed the ball into the path of Kike Linares, who finished from close range to send the home fans into wild celebrations.

The dramatic victory puts the Philippines in a strong position heading into the second leg, which will take place in three days at Thammasat Stadium, where Thailand will look to overturn the deficit and keep their ASEAN Cup hopes alive.
