"Both teams have made progress compared to the last encounter in Asian Cup 2019 quarterfinals, especially Vietnam. I’m really impressed with them. Vietnam already had a solid defense before but in this game, they also improved on the offense and ball deployment. Coach Park Hang-seo has helped the players develop so much," Moriyasu said in the post-match press conference.
Japan dominated the game with double possession compared to Vietnam, had 13 shots (five on target) while Vietnam only had six (one on target). However, Japan could only score one goal against the solid defense of Vietnam. They netted one more time but VAR disallowed the goal due to offside.
"We were in a situation where we must win to maintain hope. We can really feel the pressure. It’s unfortunate that our second goal was denied. But overall, the players did a great job. The fact that we only scored one goal showed how good Vietnam were," Moriyasu added.
Thursday win helped Japan climb to third in group B, with only one point behind Australia. Previously, they were under great pressure after losses against Oman and Saudi Arabia.
For Vietnam, this is their fifth consecutive defeat and the team are still at the bottom of group B with zero point. The Golden Dragons will play the next game with Saudi Arabia on November 16.
