Hong Kong woman slams football association after club loses training pitch to Ronaldo's Al-Nassr

A defender of local club Kitchee has criticized the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) after her team's training slot was cancelled and handed to Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr ahead of the Saudi Super Cup.

Danielle Vos voiced her anger on social media by reposting Ronaldo's Instagram update from the Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Center, where the Portuguese star was seen training with his teammates. She captioned it with frustration: "Shameful, once again."

The Dutch defender explained that Kitchee has booked natural grass pitches for the entire week to prepare for their AFC Women's Club Championship qualifier in Cambodia on Aug. 28. But on Friday, their booking was reportedly canceled, with the HKFA citing Al-Nassr's request to use the facility, The Standard reported.

Kitchee's Danielle Vos voices her frustration on Instagram after her team's training pitch booking was canceled for Al Nassr's session on Aug. 17, 2025.

Vos questioned whether the move reflected poor planning or simply a lack of support for women's football. She also raised concerns about double standards, pointing out that her side had previously been required to train as late as 9:30 p.m. and asking whether Al-Nassr had faced such a restriction.

She added that situations like this left her wondering why she continued to pour so much energy into football, warning that such treatment sends a discouraging message to young girls in Hong Kong who dream of pursuing a footballing career.

Kitchee normally train on artificial grass, but deliberately booked grass pitches to mirror the conditions they expect in Cambodia.

Media reports said the HKFA suggested two alternatives, but neither was suitable with the team's requirements.

As a result, the team will now complete their preparations at their regular ground before playing Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown and India’s East Bengal in the qualifiers.

Vos, 25, joined Kitchee in 2023 after coming back from two knee surgeries and captained the team in last year’s unsuccessful Champions League qualifying campaign. This year, she and her teammates remain determined to qualify for the main competition.

The HKFA has yet to comment on the scheduling conflict.

Hong Kong will host the Saudi Super Cup from Tuesday to Saturday at the Hong Kong Stadium. Four clubs, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, Al-Qadisiyah and Al-Ahli, will compete in the event, which marks the first time the tournament has been staged in East Asia.
