Jurgen Gede will be the head coach of Viettel FC at AFC Champions League (ACL) since the current coach is not eligible.

"Our technical director of youth football Jurgen Gede will coach the club in AFC Champions League, while current head coach Truong Viet Hoang will be the assistant," Viettel announced Thursday.

Hoang has yet to acquire an AFC Pro Coaching Diploma, the highest level of coaching accreditation issued by the Asian Football Confederation. He will continue as Viettel’s head coach in domestic competitions like V. League and National Cup.

Gede, 65, had been the assistant coach and manager of 16 teams, including the U23 Iran and Uzbekistan national teams. The German held the position of tech director at the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) from 2016 to 2020. After leaving VFF, Viettel recruited him as the club’s tech director of youth football.

Viettel are in Thailand at the moment to compete for the ACL group stage from June 26 to July 11. They will play ACL 2020 champions, South Korean club Ulsan Huyndai, Thai champions BG Pathum United and Kaya Iloilo of the Philippines in group F.
