Than Quang Ninh will not compete in V. League 2022 due to current financial difficulties.

"There's no time left for Quang Ninh. V. League is down to 13 teams next season," a Vietnam Football Federation official told VnExpress on Thursday.

Quang Ninh owes players salaries, bonuses, etc., estimated at around VND70 billion ($3.095 million). The club has been in a difficult financial situation since last year due to a lack of sponsors and Covid-19.

Many players have asked to be released from their contracts to find new clubs. In order to leave, they must sign a commitment not to sue the club for debt collection.

The club’s president Pham Thanh Hung also requested to return the team to Quang Ninh Province.

Some enterprises were willing to take over the team but didn’t agree to pay off its staggering debt.

Quang Ninh was runner-up in 2013 V. League 2 and promoted to 2014 V. League 1.

The club won National Super Cup in 2016 after defeating V. League champion Hanoi FC. In the 2019 season, Quang Ninh reached their highest position so far, finishing third.
