SEA Games: Vietnam win another 20 gold medals Wednesday

Martial arts played a major part in Vietnam's adding 20 gold to their SEA Games medal tally Wednesday.

Judo won two gold medals in men's kodokan goshin jutsu and women's katame no kata, and vovinam won one in women's -55kg event.

Karate won two gold medals. Nguyen Thi Ngoan, world's kumite champion in 2017, earned a gold medal in under-61kg kumite event at the 31st SEA Games. Earlier Vietnam won their first gold in karate at the games thanks to Nguyen Thi Phuong's performance.

In taekwondo, Nguyen Thi Huong win gold in women's 73kg event, and Tran Thi Anh Tuyet in the 53kg event, both by beating their Filipino opponents.

Wrestling's women won six gold medals during the day.

In swimming, Tran Hung Nguyen won a gold medal in men's 200m individual medley.

Pham Thanh Bao won a gold medal by finishing the 50m breaststroke event in 28.28 seconds. Indonesia won silver and Singapore won bronze.

Vo Thi My Tien won a silver medal in women's 1,500m event, finishing in 16:55:88 minutes, 19 seconds behind Singapore's Ching Hwee Gan.

Athletics won three gold medals.

A team comprising Hoang Thi Ngoc, Quach Thi Lan, Nguyen Thi Hang and Nguyen Thi Huyen won a gold medal in 4x400m women's relay. They finished in 3:37:99 minutes to top the event for the fourth Games in a row.

Pham Thi Hong Le won an easy gold by finishing the 10,000m run in 35:56:38 minutes, nearly one minute faster than her result at the previous Games, where she won silver.

Vietnam's Lo Thi Hoang won a gold medal after breaking the SEA Games record in javelin throw. Hoang threw 56,37 meters, breaking the SEA Games record and earning the 17th gold medal for Vietnam's athletics at the 31st Southeast Asian Games.

In billiards, Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu defeated billiards legend Efren Reyes of the Philippines in men's 1-cushion carom singles semi final Wednesday.

Tu will face Vietnam's Pham Quoc Tuan in the final.

Reyes, 68, made many mistakes despite some excellent moves. He will continue his SEA Games run in men's 3-cushion carom singles, playing Vietnam's number one cuiest Tran Quyet Chien on Friday.

Vietnam have won three gold medals Wednesday in fencing and canoeing.

In fencing, Bui Thi Thu Ha, Do Thi Tam, Pham Thi Thu Hoai and Phung Thi Khanh Linh beat their Singapore opponents in women's sabre team event to win gold.

Vietnam also won a silver medal in archery's men's team recurve, where Indonesia won the gold medal.

Canoeing won two gold medals in the morning.

The men's four-person canoeing team comprising Pham Hong Quan, Tran Thanh, Hien Nam and Nguyen Quoc Toan finished first in the men's C4 1,000m event in 3:35:147 minutes. Indonesia won silver medal and Myanmar bronze.

Truong Thi Phuong and Nguyen Thi Ngan also won gold in women's canoe double 1000m, where Thailand won silver and Indonesia bronze.

There are also events in golf, pétanque, tennis, esports, shooting, fencing, badminton, chess, beach volleyball, sepak takraw, bowling, basketball, artistic gymnastics, and xiangqi later today.
