Readers say more parking spaces are the first solution to sidewalk encroachment in major Vietnamese cities, and businesses blocking the space need to be strictly dealt with.

"The pavements in all of the city streets in Vietnam are just parking places for motorbikes and cars..., vendors, of every description. The government needs to build car parks and bike parks, and charge nominal fees."

"The only solution is for the government to create more parking spaces. Thousands of new vehicles are being registered each day."

"The authorities should provide alternative parking spaces. This is due to poor urban planning. If shops continue to block the sidewalks then suspend their business for 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, etc."

"The solution is so simple, but everything seems not possible. Provide parking malls, bike parking storage and dedicated eating streets for the poor vendors! There is enough money somewhere. Take a flight to Singapore to see how it's properly done."

"Singapore solved this by erecting Hawker Centers for street food, poor vendors should be subsidized to allow them to have a space, build suitable parking garages and start towing illegally parked cars and bikes. Fine shop owners heavily for encroaching on the sidewalk. Just some thoughts on the subject."

"Poor food sellers being moved on when there isn't sufficient parking places.....needs active provision of parking places before implementation of policy. It failed before and likely to fail again."
Mike McLurg

"Definitely no easy solutions. Not enough land for parking spaces....and just how much do they need to make life easy for the car owners?.... I live with the multi-use sidewalks...and at least you can say the space is utilized to the max!!!!"
