I have seen a shopkeeper look unhappy on many occasions when a customer asked them for a QR code or bank account details to pay VND5,000-10,000 (20-40 U.S. cents).

A store near my house recently became innovative to attract more customers: It started accepting payments through QR codes and e-wallets.

Its owner said the new payment methods help her control the money flow better and she does not have to keep small change on hand.

But I also know other shopkeepers who are annoyed when asked for a QR code or bank account details. And I can understand why.

They are annoyed when a customer who bought a dish rag or a lighter for VND5,000-10,000 offers to transfer the money.

The profit from such a transaction is tiny, and the shop owner has to pay a fee for the transfer.

Cashless payment is convenient but only when used in the right place and at the right time.
