English will no longer be a compulsory subject in Vietnam’s national high school graduation exam in 2025, and readers don’t see that as a good idea.

"Giant step backwards. English is an international language. Everyone should have a basic understanding. University courses require it as part of their entrance."
Phil

"In a global economy, and in recognition of the poor language skills throughout the country this seems like a poor choice that may backfire."

"You either go forwards and join the international community, or like to go backwards and deny the kids an important language skill. English! All we read these days is the Government wants to upgrade Vietnam’s status to an advanced country and is seeking foreign FDI in advanced technologies, yet English is not important? Maybe the school kids should have had a say in all this, it's their future!"
Hans van Goor

"It completely changed Singapore when the decision was made to make English learning mandatory in 1960. What a pity to see this."

"As a recently graduate student from high school education, I think that English must become an essential skill for every student if they want to satisfy their knowledge demand because that in university pupils have to read a lot of references in foreign language. Without English, they could face too many problems while interpreting the essence of the matter."

"Why wouldn't you have English in a globalized world? You are setting the students another obstacle to be international employees."
