The national flag carrier said the frequency of flights is to meet the increasing travel demand of passengers in the context that Bamboo Airways would suspend the service from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao from April after reaching a deal to terminate a contract to lease three Embraer E190 jets.
Bamboo Airways in September 2020 became the first airline to operate the Hanoi – Con Dao route. Before that, only Vietnam Airlines and VASCO had routes from HCMC and Can Tho to the archipelago using the short-range jet ATR72.
Situated around 230 kilometers (143 miles) southeast of HCMC, the 16-island Con Dao Archipelago used to be known for its large prison first established by the French and later used by the Americans during the Vietnam War.
Today, Con Dao has made its mark on the global tourism map for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue waters.
Besides the air route, visitors can take high-speed boats from Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Soc Trang, and Can Tho to reach Con Dao.
