Boat and ferry services to Phu Quoc and neighboring islands have resumed after nearly three days of suspension due to bad weather.

Over 10,000 tourists stranded on Phu Quoc returned to the mainland on Tuesday, according to the Maritime Port Authority of Kien Giang Province.

Due to the impacts of Typhoon Saola that triggered heavy rains and high waves, all boat and ferry services to Phu Quoc and neighboring islands were suspended on Saturday, leaving tourism activities idle.

Phu Quoc is 120 km from Rach Gia and 45 km from Ha Tien. There are typically more than 30 high-speed boat trips from the two coastal cities to the island every day.

In addition to Phu Quoc, the number of tourists stranded on other islands in Kien Giang was estimated at around 2,000.

Truong An, a tour guide at Nam Du Island, said that there was still heavy rain on Tuesday morning, but ships and boats have been allowed to resume operation.

Most tourists stuck on Nam Du Island have returned to the mainland.

Nguyen Thien Lan, manager of a hotel in Phu Quoc, said the boat service suspension has affected her business during the holiday.

The room occupancy rate on Saturday at her hotel reached only 40% and she lost a large number of guests from nearby Rach Gia, Ha Tien and Can Tho.

During the four-day National Day break that ended on Monday, there were over 126,000 visitors to Kien Giang Province, down around one-third from last year. Its average occupancy rate reached 27%, down 43%.

Phu Quoc welcomed 62,000 visitors during the holiday, down 26.5%.
