The ancient city of Hoi An has been named the world's cheapest long-haul destination for British tourists for the first time, surpassing Indonesia's Bali, according to a new report.

The average total cost of eight popular tourist items in Hoi An is calculated at about £51 (US$64), according to the latest annual Holiday Money report released by the Post Office, the U.K.'s leading currency exchange agency.

"The former port city of HoiAn leads the way for travelers on a budget, thanks to lower restaurant and bar charges and a considerable drop in the value of the Vietnamese dong," the report said.

The list was compiled based on the average local price of eight popular tourist items at 40 tourist destinations across the world. These essential items include a cup of coffee, a pint of beer, a can/bottle of Coca-Cola, a bottle of water, sun cream, insect repellent and a three-course dinner for two with a bottle of wine.

According to the report, a pint of beer in Hoi An costs only £1.16, a can/bottle of Coca-Cola at £0.72, and suncream at £3.70 and a three-course dinner for £39.20.

Cape Town in South Africa which claimed the top spot last year was pushed to the second position, followed by Mombasa in Kenya and Tokyo in Japan.

Kuta in Bali came in eighth.
