A weekend night street entertainment zone is coming up at Thao Dien, HCMC's expat hub, and will open Friday as the city seeks to develop its night-time economy.

The zone, covering Xuan Thuy, Quoc Huong and Nguyen Van Huong streets, would open from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and feature street art performances, city authorities said Tuesday.

It will have feature stalls offering food. For a six-month trial period there will be jazz and rock concerts and don ca tai tu (traditional southern music genre) performances and shopping.

Authorities plan to operate free electric buses to transport tourists to the zone.

Located in the east of the city and surrounded by the Saigon and Rach Chiec rivers, Thao Dien is home to over 20,000 people.

The area is also dotted with luxury bars and restaurants that operate until midnight.

HCMC currently has eight night street zones, including Bui Vien and Nguyen Hue walking-only streets in District 1.
