Hanoi was 68th and HCMC at 73rd in the ranking by British company MoneyTransfers.com that compared the number of visitors with the local population at 95 tourist cities around the world.
The company used data on international arrivals from a study conducted by Euromonitor International, and all the population data and figures were derived from World Population Review.
The data sets were then used to calculate the estimated number of tourists per person residing in each city.
Hanoi hosts around 0.9 tourists for every local resident while HCMC with 0.8 travelers per resident, according to the report.
The central beach city of Da Nang is more touristy than Vietnam’s two major cities, hosting 2.1 tourists per residents.
Thailand’s Phuket was named the world's most tourist-heavy city, accommodating 118 tourists for every local resident, followed by two other Thai cities Pattaya and Krabi.
On the other side, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Beijing in China, Kolkata in India and Lima in Peru were the least overcrowded cities, with just 0.2 tourists per resident.
