I was stunned when a Gen Z candidate asked why my company does not offer breaks like others.

Barely keeping my composure, I recalled the article, "I interviewed 30 Gen Z candidates but hired none," which reminded me of a recent experience.

As a recruiter, I often interview young Gen Z candidates. Last month, one candidate asked a question that left me speechless: "Why do other companies only require eight hours a day but offer breaks for breakfast, lunch, and naps, while your company demands nine hours of straight work without any?"

After regaining my composure, I asked, "Where did you get that information about other companies?"

They replied, "It's all over the job postings online."

Though tempted to say, "Then why don't you apply there?" I realized the candidate lacked experience and life skills. Instead, I smiled and said, "There's always a bigger mountain to climb. If you keep thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, when will you be satisfied? Do you think you're ready for that higher mountain? If you're confident, why are you here, comparing and complaining?" Needless to say, I didn't hire them.

Afterward, HR informed me of their feedback, in which they thanked "Mr. Interviewer." Honestly, I wanted to thank them, too – at least they showed their true colors early on. Had I hired them, I'd likely have ended up with a headache.

Many Gen Z candidates today seem to have inflated egos despite their lack of experience and knowledge. Still, I don't dislike them. They're likable and teachable, though it takes more effort than with previous generations. But with the right guidance, they're sharp and ready to learn.
