Two babysitters in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong were arrested Monday after a two-year-old girl under their care was hospitalized in critical condition.

Vuong Ngoc Thao Vy, 24, and Huynh Thi Thanh Hang, 26, will be probed for "torture," police said.

Investigations found the girl's mother had to work far from home. Last month, she left the baby to a local kindergarten staff, who, while busy with some private affairs, left the girl at Vy and Hang's for VND2 million ($86) a month.

Hang brought the girl to Lam Dong Children's Hospital after she kept vomiting during lunch Sunday. As the girl was bruised all over, Hang told doctors that she had fallen.

Doctors later found the girl suffered from brain and lung damage, and multiple injuries across her body. They transferred her to Lam Dong General Hospital and informed police as they suspected the girl had been beaten.

Hang and Vy admitted they had beaten and kicked the girl but said the brain injury was the result of the girl having fallen on her own.

Police are investigating further.
