A Vietnamese man died while in detention at a Japanese police station on April 29, and his cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

The man, 29, was at a police station in Ibaraki Prefecture, the Mainichi reported.

He was taken to the hospital at 7:30 a.m. because he was unresponsive and his face had become pale.

He was pronounced dead that evening, according to the Shimotsuma police station.

The man was originally arrested on April 20 for allegedly violating immigration and refugee policies.

At the time of his arrest, he had an injured shoulder due to a fall, and had been prescribed painkillers at a hospital.

On the morning of his death, he had eaten only a small amount of food for breakfast, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
