The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security will start issuing passports with electronic chips on March 1.

Over 100 countries have already switched to electronic passports, said the Immigration Department under the ministry.

There will not be many other changes to the existing passport save for a symbol of a chip on the front cover page.

The actual chip will be in the back cover page and contains identity and biometric information like fingerprints.

The chips will help improve security by making it difficult for information to be copied, forged, stolen, or tracked, the department said.
