Vietnam returned the remains of an American soldier to U.S. representatives at a handover ceremony in Hanoi Friday.

The remains handed over were found during the 148th search operation carried out from August to September 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

They were examined by Vietnamese and American forensic experts in Hanoi, who concluded that they might be related to a U.S. soldier missing during the Vietnam War.

It was the 159th handover since 1973.

The remains will be sent to Hawaii, U.S. for further verification.

The search for the remains of U.S. soldiers missing in the Vietnam War is a humanitarian operation jointly carried out by the governments of Vietnam and the U.S.
