Vietnam deputy PM passes away

Le Van Thanh, deputy prime minister and member of the Communist Party Central Committee, died at age 61 on Tuesday.

He died at his private property in the northern city of Hai Phong.

According to the Central Committee on Health Care for Senior Governmental Officials, Thanh died of illness. His funeral and other relevant procedures will be announced later.

A master’s degree holder in Economics Management, Thanh used to be the director of the Hai Phong Cement Company.

He then became chairman of Hai Phong’s People’s Council and was elected to the Party Central Committee.

He was appointed deputy prime minister in April 2021, three months after being re-elected as a member of the Party Central Committee at the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

With his expertise in economics, Thanh was in charge of managing the industries, agriculture, rural area developments, international trade, construction, and transportation, as well as national, regional and provincial planning, and the efficient usage of energy.

He was also in charge of managing the implementation of key national projects, economic zones, industrial zones, manufacturing areas, anti-flooding and rescue projects, and climate change response strategies.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Resources and Environment were all under his supervision.

Thanh last attended a public event on Nov. 16, 2022.
