Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan was appointed Vietnam's acting president by the Communist Party's Politburo on Thursday, following Vo Van Thuong's exit from the role.

Xuan will hold the position until the National Assembly can vote for a new president.

This is the second time in the 2021-2026 term where Xuan was appointed as an acting president. In January last year, Xuan also held the position for over a month after Nguyen Xuan Phuc exited the role.

Xuan, 54, from the southern province of An Giang, holds a master's degree in public management. She became the youngest vice president to be voted by the National Assembly in April 2021, at age 51.

Throughout her three years in the position, Xuan had made trips to other countries like Bulgaria, Greek and Kazakhstan, as well as attending events like the Global Summit of Women in 2021 and 2023.

As an acting president, in February 2023 she appointed 13 new ambassadors for Vietnam in foreign countries.
