Business mogul Nguyen Phuong Hang, now in jail for performing livestreams deemed "slanderous", is asking for up to VND500 billion ($20.45 million) compensation from a journalist and a lawyer for damaging her reputation.

The request from Hang, 52, general director of the Dai Nam company, was stated in a report issued by HCMC police on Thursday.

Hang said journalist Dang Thi Han Ni, 46, and lawyer Tran Van Sy, 66, had issued fabricated and untrue information that violated the reputation and honor of Hang and her husband, while damaging the legal rights and interests of the Dai Nam company and her charity fund Hang Huu.

She requested a VND300-500 billion as compensation, saying the money would be sent to the state fund.

Hang and her husband, Huynh Uy Dung, who is Dai Nam's chairman, have not provided any document to prove their claimed physical and mental damage.

Authorities are requesting prosecutors to charge Ni and Sy for abusing democratic freedom. Investigators are also hearing Hang and her husband’s confessions to clarify their request for compensation.

Ni has been a reporter at the Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper since 2002. She has made comments on Hang as she herself was allegedly slandered on Hang's livestreams on September 3, 2021, investigation found.

Also on September 3, 2021, Ni refuted Hang’s claims while looking up Hang’s information on Wikipedia, and used this information in her statements. Ni had admitted that Wikipedia is an unofficial information source.

Sy meanwhile was accused by authorities to upload videos on YouTube, talking about Hang and her husband’s personal lives. Sy said he made his statements as Hang has slandered several artists and journalists, and that his statements were made based on previous recordings by Hang, legal documents and newspapers.

Hang was sentenced to three years in prison last month by the HCMC People’s Court for abusing democratic freedom. From March 2021 to March 2022, Hang and several others performed 57 livestreams that harmed the reputation of 10 individuals, including singer Thuy Tien and her husband Cong Vinh, singers Vy Oanh, Dam Vinh Hung, actor Hoai Linh, and reporters Dang Thi Han Ni and Duc Hien. Many videos questioned the integrity of their charity works.
