A sleeper bus carrying 20 people was running on National Highway 1 when it crashed into nine houses in central Binh Thuan Province on Thursday.

At around 12 a.m., Nguyen Dinh Tu, 56, was driving a sleeper bus on the Binh Dinh-Vung Tau route on National Highway 1. When the bus entered the Phu Thanh area of Ham Thuan Bac District, it swerved to the right and hit nine houses and a car parked by the side of the road.

Roofs and walls of the houses could be seen scattered on the street before the collapsed buildings. An electric pole also fell. People inside the houses ran outside in panic. The driver and the passengers were unharmed.

Sau, a local, said his family was asleep when they heard a loud noise in front of their home.

"I was jolted awake and ran outside, and saw pieces of the roof and the walls scattered in front of me," he said, adding that when the bus came to a stop, the driver walked out, having seemingly fallen asleep while driving.

Police of Ham Thuan Bac District have inspected the scene and are investigating the incident. The bus has been temporarily seized.
